In Sukhumi, residents of Abkhazia bid farewell to first President Vladislav Ardzinba

Today, people in Sukhumi follow Vladislav Ardzinba, their first President and a symbol of the national-liberation struggle of the people of Abkhazia, to his grave. At 9 in the morning the coffin with his body was placed in the Abkhazian State Philharmonic Society. The mourning ceremony will last till 3:00 p.m. Moscow time.

No agreements reached at five-sided meeting in Gali, Abkhazia

On March 2, in Abkhazia, at a meeting in Gali, the working group on prevention of and reaction to incidents in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflicts zone, no agreement was reached on any point. This was reported by Levan Tevzaya, who represents the government of the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic in exile, recognized by Tbilisi. Delegates from Abkhazia, Russia, Georgia UN and EU took part in the meeting.

Georgian citizen died in Abkhazian prison from kidney insufficiency, not beatings, doctors say

Citizen of Georgia Demur Gogokhiya, who served his term in the Dranda Prison in Abkhazia, died from sharp kidney insufficiency, not from beatings. This was stated today to journalists in Sukhumi by Guram Shoua, chief physician of the Agudzeri Hospital, who made his comments on the information from the Georgian party about Gogokhiya's violent death.

NGOs from Russia, South Ossetia and Georgia meet in Yerevan within Strasbourg dialogue

On February 20-21, the capital of Armenia hosted a meeting of NGO leaders from Russia, Georgia and South Ossetia within the limits of the Strasbourg dialogue. They discussed ways of further interaction of civil societies in conflict zones.

Saakashvili's words about restart of armed conflict caused sharp reaction of Sukhumi

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Abkhazia has expressed its serious concern of the speech of President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili at the Royal Institute of International Relations in London, where he reconfirmed the intention of the Georgian party to solve the Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian conflicts by force of arms.

Komoedov: deployment of united military bases in Abkhazia will strengthen Russian Black Sea Fleet

Due to placement of Russian united military bases in Abkhazia, the Black Sea Fleet of Russia will become less vulnerable. This is the opinion of Admiral Vladimir Komoedov, former Commander of the Black Sea Fleet (BSF) and now Deputy of the State Duma. According to President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh, the issue of BSF transfer from Crimea to Abkhazia is not discussed, as Abkhazia has enough Russian troops to cope with Georgian threats.

Georgia to claim USD 40 billion from Russia for Abkhazia and South Ossetia

Georgian authorities plan to go to international courts with claims against Russia and demand compensation worth several dozens billion US dollars for the damage caused, in the opinion of the Georgian party, by Russia's actions in Abkhazia and South Ossetia from early 1990s.

Abkhazian leader: attitude to national minorities shows country's level of democracy

In Abkhazia, there is understanding that attitude to national minorities is among basic parameters of a country's development level as a democratic state. This was stated by President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh on February 3 in Sukhumi, in the course of his meeting with Knuth Vollebek, OSCE Supreme Commissioner on National Minorities.
